We support children at the school and local level, ensuring they receive the education, accommodations, and services needed for success. From preschoolers to high school graduates transitioning to further education and employment, we navigate the world of special education in central Virginia.
IEPs and Section 504 Plans provide essential services and accommodations for students, but they differ in purpose, eligibility, and procedural safeguards. An evaluation will determine the right plan for your child. We work with you and your child's school to modify and tailor the plan as needed to meet their unique needs.
Special education is provided in various settings, with schools required to educate children with disabilities alongside their peers to the maximum extent possible. The right classroom placement in the least restrictive environment is key to your child's growth. We work with schools to ensure placement decisions consider your child's unique strengths and needs.
Schools can provide various accommodations, including "supplementary aids and services" to support children with disabilities in regular education classes, and "related services" to help them benefit from special education. Each child’s needs are unique, and so are the services and supports they require. We take a collaborative approach, working with the school or private evaluators to advocate for the best services tailored to your child’s needs.
Attention to detail is central to our advocacy. We thoroughly review all relevant records, evaluations, and observations, including progress reports, report cards, behavior reports, special education evaluations, and private assessments. We carefully examine current and past IEPs and 504 Plans to ensure consistency, progress, and identify any gaps.
We attend education-related meetings when it's in your child's best interest. Determining eligibility for special education services is just the start. We help ensure all appropriate services are considered, foster rapport with decision-makers, and ensure the school thoroughly reviews your child's records and complies with all laws and regulations. With Love of Learning by your side, you'll be prepared and confident as you navigate these important meetings.
When conflicts arise that can’t be resolved informally, we guide you through formal procedures like mediation, due process complaints, resolution sessions, hearings, and state complaints under the IDEA. The ADA and Section 504 also offer protections, with complaints filed through the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights. We carefully assess each situation and recommend the best course of action on a case-by-case basis.
